Why Choose Hydrogen Bus?

environmentally friendly, efficient, and promising mode of transportation

Zero Emissions

The hydrogen bus is powered by hydrogen gas, which reacts with oxygen from the air to generate electricity. The chemical reaction that occurs produces zero emissions, as the only by-product of the reaction is water vapour. This helps to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. Premier Motor Group is committed to finding a much more energy efficient and sustainable way to provide services throughout the Illawarra and South Coast.

High Energy Efficiency

Hydrogen has a much higher density compared to conventional fuels such as diesel. This means that a smaller amount of hydrogen can store and release a larger amount of energy. The hydrogen powered bus utilises a direct conversion to electricity to power the motor. Compared to traditional internal combustion engines, this reduces the amount of energy conversion steps and does not result in the loss of energy. The hydrogen bus also possesses regenerative technology, this means that unused kinetic energy is converted into electricity that is stored in the vehicle’s fuel cell, which can then be used to power the vehicle, reducing the overall energy consumption.

Fast Refueling

Australia currently has fewer than 10 hydrogen refuelling stations. Luckily, one of these stations is located within the Illawarra. With access to this station, the hydrogen bus will be refuelled on a daily basis (if needed), which only takes approximately 5-10 minutes, similar to refuelling at a petrol station. This fast-refuelling time is extremely beneficial and will allow us to operate the hydrogen bus more frequently and across more services, ensuring all areas of the Illawarra are able to experience this opportunity.

Long Range

The hydrogen bus possesses a longer driving range due to its ability to store hydrogen in larger quantities, regenerate energy and refuel quickly. All of the aforementioned are extremely beneficial to long distance driving and would spark interest and opportunity within communities outside of the Illawarra and South Coast.

Low Noise

The hydrogen bus is much quieter than a diesel bus for a few reasons. Hydrogen buses have a powertrain design, meaning there are less parts required to move around for the bus to drive, creating less mechanical noise and allowing for smoother operation. Overall, the design and operation of the vehicle contributes to a much more comfortable and quieter travel experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Premier Illawarra - Hydrogen Bus Project

A hydrogen bus is powered by fuel cells that convert hydrogen gas into electricity. This electricity then powers the electric motors that drive the bus. The only by-products of this process are water and heat, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel buses.

Yes, hydrogen buses are designed with safety in mind. The hydrogen tanks are built to withstand severe impacts, and there are multiple sensors and safety systems in place to detect and manage leaks or other potential issues.

The ticket prices for riding a hydrogen bus are generally comparable to those of traditional buses. While the operational costs for hydrogen fuel can be higher, many service providers work to keep fares affordable for passengers.

The frequency at which a hydrogen bus needs to refuel depends on several factors. On average, hydrogen buses can travel approximately 300 to 400 kilometers (about 186 to 250 miles) on a full tank of hydrogen. This means that under typical urban operating conditions, a hydrogen bus might need to refuel every day or every other day.
